Chillers with free cooling system

Free cooling system

PRIMEHOLOD provides delivery, mounting, commissioning and start-up and service maintenance of any types of chillers, including models with “free cooling” option, dry coolers, and absorption chillers.

The current type of chillers uses additional mode of natural free cooling that is applied in many conditioning systems. Its operation principle implies direct use of cold air from the outside in the autumn-summer to cool the work chamber. The conditioning system is equipped by additional cooling contour with non-freezing liquid (or its water solution). The free cooling mode helps to reduce compressor's operation time. As compressor is the major consumer of electric power in conditioning system, it significantly increases the cost-efficiency.

Precision conditioners with a free cooling system allow reducing the operating costs in all-year-round conditioner use. Free cooling system includes two refrigerating contours – Freon and glycolic. Their operation modes are changed depending on the temperature of outside air.

Free cooling work samples:

Conditioning mode

It is used in the outside air temperature above 20°С. Freon contour works in full load. Glycolic contour cools the condenser of Freon contour.

Partial free cooling mode

It is used, when the temperature of the outside air is lower than 20°С. Freon contour works in partial load mode. Glycolic contour partially refrigerates room air and cools the condenser of Freon contour.

Full free cooling mode

It is used when the outside temperature is below 8°С. Air cooling is fully performed by glycolic contour, the compressor is switched off. It is maximally cost-saving mode compared to a standard air conditioner.

A chiller with free cooling utilizes the advantages of low outside temperatures for cooling water avoiding the work of compressors. Using a 3 head valve, the cooling liquid is transferred to an additional free cooling heat-exchange unit before going to an evaporator. This helps to save energy, even if the outside air temperature is not low enough for providing full cooling operation, as compressors do the remaining job. Therefore a chiller with free cooling function can work in mechanical cooling mode and/or free cooling mode, depending on the heat load and outside temperature of the air. Thanks to its compact design with a free cooling heat-exchange unit, integrated into the chiller body, there is one more advantage – reduced size requirements compared to standard chiller plus dry cooler. Such mode provides up to 40% of energy saving.

Spiral compressor

In order to gain high performance level spiral hermetic compressors are used. Installed by one or for the each coolant circuit they guarantee the efficiency, quietness and reliability of the chiller in general.

Chiller is a refrigeration machine aimed at using in central conditioning systems. Such cooling machine can chill or heat (heat pump function) the coolant, transferring it to francoils or some other heat exchangers by piping system.

Chillers are used for extracting and removal of excessive heat and supporting the preset optimal temperature and heat modes in operation of various industrial equipment, technological devices, instruments, fitment, as well as technological processes related to increased heat loads and heat radiation.

A monoblock with free cooling system

Chillers with free cooling help to save up to 80% of electric capacity in winter time. Also free cooling chillers save up to 50% of energy in autumn/summer.

Free cooling for server rooms

Energy saving technology of air conditioning called “free cooling” has become highly useful in data centers and server rooms. Proper functioning of sensitive hardware stored in such rooms requires constant support of the air temperature on preset level. The hardware operation requires less energy than providing proper temperature conditions using free cooling system. Free cooling helps to decrease the expenses significantly.

Operation principle

Ability to create comfortable climate for big areas helped a central conditioning system to earn popularity in building and reconstruction of different buildings, such as:

1. banks,

2. airports,

3. business centres,

4. hotels.

Chiller types:

The refrigeration type of chiller condenser

- air cooling. The refrigerating machine of such type has a structure similar to standard household conditioners: the blow of a condenser is performed by the airflow from a ventilator;

- water cooling. Here the condenser’s cooling is performed by the stream water. Water cooling helps to reduce the size and cost of equipment significantly. Condensers of refrigerator machines cooled by this method require using the stream water or installation of circulation water supply system (spray tower).

Heating mode in chillers

- using a heat pump (reversal). Models of refrigerator units of this type are able not only to cool, but also heat the coolant;

- without using a heat pump. Such models only chill the coolant.

The system construction design

- Chiller with an integrated condenser. It is an autonomous refrigerator unit, and only pipes from the pumping station are connected to it.

- Chillers with remote condenser. Here the condenser itself is a remote block. Such absorption refrigerator units have a construction that allows mounting absorption chillers inside the room, while the condensers can be installed on the building roof. In this case the hardware reliability is increased, and the maintenance becomes simpler due to constant air temperature in rooms.

The type of ventilator in chillers

- Axial ventilator. Low price is the major advantage of such refrigerator units. The disadvantage is creating rather small air drag. That is why such equipment can be installed only on the open space like roof or wall of a building.

- Rotary ventilator. The advantage of refrigerator unit: rather strong air drag is generated that allows installing the equipment inside the building, providing the air intake and output of excessive air via air duct system.

Chillers are divided to:

- Monoblock chillers

- Сhillers with “Free Cooling” function

- Chillers with “Heat pump” function

- Condenser-free chillers

- Absorption chillers

Monoblock chillers

Nowadays there are two types of such equipment: stack and monoblock. Stack systems consist of separate elements: ventilator, muffler, filter, automation system, etc. Before purchasing such refrigerator system, take into account that it should be installed in a separate room.

Monoblock refrigerator machines possess a few advantages compared to stack models:

- Thanks to locating the components in a noise proof body the noise loudless level is decreased. That is why they can be mounted in accommodation buildings. Stack systems require installation in utility rooms or specially equipped ventilation chambers.

- This type of equipment is functionally complete and balanced that provides maximum possible effectiveness.

- They feature compact outside dimensions.

- Inexpensive chiller assembly and high-quality technical maintenance of a chiller take only a few hours and require minimum of expendable materials.

Chillers with “Heat pump” option

Applying heat pump helps to improve the energy efficiency significantly. The equipment with “Heat pump” function is capable to cool the air efficiently in high outside temperatures and heat in outside temperatures below zero.

Condenser-free chillers

These models can be equipped with spiral or helical compressors for refrigerator machines and units. Standard complete set includes differential pressure regulator, electronic control valve unit and microprocessor controller.

Module chillers

Module-type chillers possess many significant advantages: the ease of mounting and transportation, simplicity of operation and maintenance. Module chillers are manufactured in different sizes according to the performance level that influences on the chiller’s price.

Absorption chillers

Absorption chillers has become highly popular lately due to their ability to lower the electric energy consumption and better balance in energy needs, as well as due to the increase of power unit EFF.

Vapour compression chillers

The elements of construction that form the base of vapour compression chiller basis form the closed loop system. The refrigeration process is performed by the coolant according to low pressure and temperature requirements.

The area of use:

Air conditioning systems is the major area of use for such chillers. Besides the current equipment is used:

- for cooling beverages in food industry;

- for cooling feed and drinking water in confectionery and bakery hardware;

- in mechanical engineering and chemical industry;

- for preparing water for application in printed publication or packaging products manufacture;

- to support the water temperature mode in sports sphere;

- to implrmrnt ice arenas for sports;

- in special medical equipment;
